6 LITURGY OF THE WORD (ii)
The Mass is made up of two 'tables' – the table of the word and the table of the Eucharist. At each table
and acclamation, that we – the People of God – make God's word our own. Parish readers are
encouraged to make good use of silence before, during and after the readings, so that this sense of
listening and hearing can be heightened. The table of the word is, of course, the Lectern and it is here
that Christ is encountered in the dialogue between reader and hearer. It is a holy place!
The readings during Mass are chosen with great care and the Second Vatican Council sought to open up
more fully the treasures of the Bible so that all might be fed and inspired during the liturgy of the word.
From the very beginning of time God has sought to reveal more of himself to his people. Here, in his
word, God comes closer to us than we are to ourselves and changes our hearts.
