Fr. Aaron Writes :19th December 2021
Dear Friends,
This week’s newsletter is a double-issue to take us through the Christmas festivities to New Year. Again, this year, we approach the celebration of the Lord’s birth at Bethlehem with some uncertainty and worry about the ongoing pandemic situation.
What remains is the gift of Hope and the constant truth of God’s unconditional love for us, shown by His coming in the flesh for our Salvation. With Mary and Joseph, what we celebrate is the light in the darkness. I hope and pray the stillness and calm of the Nativity scene may touch our hearts and minds with peace.
Peace and Joy maybe seem far from us this week, as we battle anxiety, worry and fear. However, on the Holiest of Nights we pray in the words of my favourite Christmas song O Holy Night: ‘A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices, for yonder breaks a new and glorious morn’.
I wish you all a very Happy Christmas and Blessed New Year!
I shall keep you all in my prayers this Christmas, that, gathered together, you may experience the love, joy, trust and generosity reflected in the Holy Family. We pray especially for the sick and housebound of our parish and for the bereaved, as I know this is a time when we can feel the sadness and pain of loss.
I look forward to seeing many of you at our Christmas services. Christmas is not about one day but it is a season of celebration, so attendance at one of the quieter Masses during Christmas week may be better for some.
Weekday Mass Times – on Monday (20th), Mass will be at 9:30am, as I am attending Fr Robert Ellis’ Requiem Mass in Goring at 12 Midday.
Christmas Mass and Services Times –
- Advent Confessions will take place on Monday 20th December at 7pm with visiting priests.
- Carol singing around the outdoor crib in the courtyard on Wednesday 22nd December at 4pm.
- Parish Masses on Christmas Eve will be at 5pm, 9pm and 12 Midnight (Carols at 11:30pm).
- On Christmas Day there will be Mass at 8:30am, 10am and 11:30am.
- On Sunday of the Holy Family there will be only two Masses, at 10am and at 11:30am. Please note, there will not be Mass at 8:30am on Sunday 26th December.
Christmas Offering – Priests do not receive a salary from the parish or the diocese; we rely on your generosity at the Christmas and Easter collection - which makes up the bulk of our wages for the year ahead. So, a huge thank you in advance for your generosity, especially at this difficult financial time.
Barnabas Mercer – we are delighted to be hosting a seminarian in the New Year. He will be with us for a month from 1st January. I am sure you will make him feel welcome.
Synod of Bishops on Synodality – Please do take the Synod Materials which are available at the back of the Church.
The materials are also available on the diocesan website: www.abdiocese.org.uk for you to download.
We will host meetings for the diocesan listening stage of the Synod for three weeks in January, from the week beginning Sunday 9th January. In the meanwhile, I would encourage the various groups in our parish to gather and meet and begin to reflect on the questions asked of us in this listening phase.
I also encourage families and individuals to look at the material so that, when we come to the meetings in January, we can bring our Advent reflections to the general parish meetings. Please note that anyone can submit their own contributions to the diocese; the parish meeting facilitators will submit a parish contribution.
Thanks to those who have agreed to take on the role of facilitator at the meetings.
We will host a Monday Evening Meeting at 7pm, a Meeting after the Friday morning Mass and a Meeting after the 11:30am Mass on a Sunday. All meetings are to take place in the hall.
Parish Pastoral Council: Progress – Thank you to those who have kindly agreed to serve on the new Parish Pastoral Council. I am still approaching a number of people to help in this role. More details about the launch of the Parish Pastoral Council will be announced soon, with a launch anticipated for mid/ late January 2022.
With my very best wishes and prayers this Christmastide.
Fr Aaron
