St John’s Justice and Peace Group
The Justice and Peace group is a long-established parish group committed to the Church’s Social Teaching.
We meet regularly, beginning in prayer followed by thoughtful discussion.
We work closely with CAFOD and a large part of our work is supporting CAFOD’s fundraising and campaigning activities. Other areas of activity include:
Live Simply
In 2018 St. John’s was accredited by CAFOD as a “Live Simply” parish. Live Simply is a response to Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si which calls us to protect ‘Our Common Home’.
The ‘green courtyard’, single plastics recycling, eco tips in the parish newsletter are some of our Live Simply initiatives.

Fairtrade
St John’s has been a Fairtrade parish for over 20 years. Fairtrade guarantees a fairer deal for producers in developing countries. We work with Fairtrade Horsham in organising regular Fairtrade stalls in the town and we host Horsham’s Fairtrade Christmas Market in the parish Hall.
Covenant with the Poor
The parish Covenant with the Poor is at the heart of our work as a J&P group.
Signed in 1998, the Covenant was part of a Diocesan vision to place a new relationship with the poor at the centre of the Church’s millennium celebrations. The Covenant makes four commitments:
Giving – the parish donates 10% of the weekly collection to charities at home and abroad
Advocacy – speaking out and raising awareness of issues. These include CAFOD campaigns, Fairtrade and the Climate Crisis
Prayer and worship – special liturgies, for example a Rosary for refugees, and prayers for the poor
Study and Reflection – educating ourselves on on the needs of the poor and the Church’s social teaching

Our Justice and Peace Group
We are a small and friendly group who meet monthly and we welcome new members. You don't have to get involved with everything! Occasional involvement is welcome too.
