Fr. Aaron Writes 22nd May 2022
Dear Friends,
Sunday Obligation – Please read the letter of the Bishop’s Conference of England and Wales regarding the return of the Sunday Obligation
on Pentecost Sunday, which is attached to the email version of this Newsletter for those who subscribe electronically. Hard copies of the letter are available at the back of the Church.
Sunday Morning Mass Schedule – Since the return to public worship back in July 2020, I have been celebrating an extra Sunday Mass in a revised and temporary schedule. I did this in order that we could accommodate as many people as possible at Holy Mass on Sunday whilst remaining socially-distanced, with every other pew being roped off, not for use. I find celebrating three Masses in quick succession exhausting, not being able to pause before starting the next Mass. In Church Law, priests should only typically celebrate one Mass a day, two if there is a pastoral need, three in emergencies. The time of emergency is over and so I will be returning to celebrating two Sunday Masses from the first weekend of July. With two Masses, we will be able to pool our resources and reintroduce coffee after Mass and shared Sunday lunches. Also, if I need to take a break or otherwise be away from the parish, I can reasonably ask an elderly supply priest to cover two Masses, but not three. So, this change will take effect on Sunday 3rd July when we will revert back to a 9:15am and an 11:15am Mass. I thank you for your understanding.
Full PPC (Parish Pastoral Council) Meeting - with all members will meet on Monday 13th June at 7pm in the Hall. Please note the change of date from 6th June!
Pentecost Sunday Parishioners New and Old – To mark the Birthday of the Church, there will be two parish shared meals. There will be a
Shared Supper in the Hall after the 6pm Vigil Mass on Saturday 4th June, and there will be a Shared Lunch after the 11:30am Mass on Sunday 5th June. It will be a wonderful way for us to gather socially as a parish once again; a particular focus will be for us to welcome new parishioners. This will be the beginning of reintroducing our regular shared Sunday lunches.
Pentecost in Red – It would be wonderful if, when attending Mass on Pentecost Sunday, including the Vigil, you could wear the colour red – the colour of the Holy Ghost! It would create a talking point!
New Catholics – On Tuesday 14th, 21st and 28th June, there will be a mini-course held, organised for all those who have expressed a desire to become a Catholic and for those who wish to be baptised and confirmed. We will look at the three questions: Why God? Why Christ? Why the Church? We will meet in Rooms 2/3 of the Parish Hall at 7pm. Wine and nibbles will be available. To anyone who would like to join the group as a refresher, you’d be most welcome.
Formation Social – A fruit of the PPC’s Formation Sub-Group is that two of the members have started a new Lifelong Formation initiative – The Formation Social. Please see the announcement in the Newsletter and posters around the church. The first meeting with Paul and Rahul will be on the topic of Corpus Christi and will take place on Monday 6th June at 7:30pm in the Hall. It is an opportunity for formation, drinks, discussion and fellowship.
The Parish Fayre - In response to the Stewardship drive during Lent, when we called for more volunteers in parish ministries, there will be a Parish Fayre of Volunteers on the weekend of 16/17th of July. There will be manned stalls with information on how to join the various
ministries and volunteer roles in our parish.
Ministry of Consolation – Darren Perks was commissioned for our parish and deanery for the Ministry of Consolation last Sunday at the
8:30am Mass. Darren will be available to speak to if you are bereaved, have experienced loss and are suffering grief. He can be contacted
through the Parish Office and there is a poster on the noticeboard at the back of the Church with more information. I wish Darren well in this very important parish ministry to those who have lost loved ones and friends.
Rome – In my capacity as Secretary to the Roman Association and Trustee, I shall be away for a number of meetings in Rome this week and I shall be celebrating a wedding in Orvieto Cathedral next week for Katy and Theo. Katy is Jackie and Ian Dockreay’s daughter. I will keep you in my prayers whilst away.
In Memoriam – Please pray for Hazel Ghavami RIP who has died. Keep her and her family in your thoughts and prayers this coming week.
With every prayer and good wish this Eastertide,
Fr Aaron
