Live Simply, So Others Can Simply Live
St John's marks 27 years of its Covenant with the Poor and asks parishioners to think beyond the recycling bin
Next weekend, at every Mass, St John the Evangelist will celebrate the 27th anniversary of our Parish Covenant with the Poor. For nearly three decades, this commitment has shaped how we live as a community. We walk alongside our brothers and sisters affected by poverty, war and oppression. We speak out on their behalf, include them in our liturgies, and keep them in our prayers. We also give 10% of our parish income to six partner charities, three in the UK and three overseas.
The anniversary is a chance to give thanks for everyone who has kept this promise alive, and to look again at how our everyday choices affect people far beyond Horsham.
Reduce and reuse, not just recycle
The parish Live Simply group is encouraging households to think beyond recycling. Recycling is often treated as the main way to protect the environment, but cutting down on waste and reusing items instead of throwing them away can be just as effective, and often more so.
West Sussex County Council has a helpful collection of practical ideas for reducing household waste: https://www.westsussex.gov.uk/land-waste-and-housing/waste-and-recycling/recycling-and-waste-prevention/reduce-your-waste/
Living simply means caring for creation and for the people most affected when it is harmed, and it sits naturally alongside our Covenant with the Poor.
