The Sacrament of Confirmation

The sacrament of Confirmation is necessary for the completion of baptismal grace. For "by the sacrament of Confirmation, [the baptised] are more perfectly bound to the Church and are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit. Hence they are, as true witnesses of Christ, more strictly obliged to spread and defend the faith by word and deed. (CC 1285)

Confirmation, it's origins

Confirmation is a Sacrament instituted by Christ and is different from the Sacrament of Baptism, but is complimentary to it. Confirmation is administered by laying-on of hands and anointing with chrism accompanied by prayer. The chrism is blessed by the Bishop at the Chrism Mass in Holy Week and he will confer the sacrament on you.

In January 2014, Pope Francis explained that Confirmation must be understood as “continuing from Baptism, to which it is indissolubly linked”. “Baptism and Confirmation along with the Eucharist, constitute a single saving event- Christian initiation- in which we are brought into Christ who died and rose again, and became new creatures and members of the Church”

Pope Francis continued by stating “this is one of the reasons it is important that all our children receive this Sacrament, we are all concerned about Baptising them, but perhaps less so with Confirmation, and therefore they remain at a halfway point, and do not receive the fullness of the Holy Spirit that gives us the strength to go forward in Christian life”.

More information about Confirmation is available within the application form, which can be found on this page.
