THE GUILD OF ST STEPHEN

An International organisation of Altar Servers

More about the St Stephen's Guild

Father Hamilton McDonald founded The Guild of St Stephen (an International Organisation of Altar Servers) in England in 1904. This Society of Altar Servers was initially formed at the Convent of the Sacred Heart in London. The purpose of which was to encourage, positively and practically, the highest standards of serving at the Church's liturgy; in doing so helping the celebration of the Mass to be even more fruitful.

For our Altar Servers

We are both blessed and privileged to be supported by such an amazing group of diverse individuals serving our Parish in the capacity of Altar Servers. We have young, middle age and more senior servers, who consistently add a mixture of enthusiasm, energy to the celebration of the Mass.

Information

The actual meaning o Stephen's name is "crown". Through his Martyrdom, Stephen became the first disciple of Jesus to receive the crown. Stephen, a Deacon in the early Christian Church, helped the Church by taking care of the widows and the poor. The Apostles needed help with caring for the people, and so they appointed, or "ordained, seven Deacons. Stephen was the most famous of these because he was the first Martyr.
