Deacon Tom Writes 23rd April 2023
I was privileged last Wednesday evening to attend the showing of the film ‘The Letter’ based on Pope Francis’ encyclical
‘Laudato Si’, - ‘On Care For Our Common Home’.
The film which lasted 80 minutes showed the invitation to 5 people for different continents who were involved in varied
aspects of concern for the health of our planet.
These 5 represented Youth; Environment; Poverty and Indigenous peoples. They came from India, Hawaii, Senegal and
Brazil respectively. Each received a personal letter from Pope Francis inviting them to Rome in order that he received first-hand information on the living conditions each was experiencing. The content of the film was both educational and
emotional, enabling those present to a deeper understanding of the environmental urgency needed to reduce the impact
on our common home to the minimum.
The lead given by Pope Francis was both inspirational and humbling, calling on all people, not least Christians, to do all they can to alleviate the growing situation in front of us.
I urge you to watch ‘The Letter’ and come to your own conclusions as how each one of us should conduct our lives on this most urgent of issues. This can be found at https:/www.theletterfilm.org/watch/
As a community we hope to further this discussion through the Justice & Peace group in our parish, find ways that we can, together, help to heal the God given gift from the Creator of our Common Home.
Having watched the film, if you have any thoughts on how we may move forward please send your thoughts to:
