Fr. Aaron Writes 10th April 2022
Dear Friends,
This weekend we come to the celebration of Palm Sunday – we begin our Holy Week celebrations with the triumphal entrance of Jesus into the city of Jerusalem.
This year we are able to celebrate Holy Week and the Sacred Triduum without any restrictions, returning back to many of the well loved practices that call to mind the sacrificial service and love of Christ for us all. We are encouraged to take our place in the drama of Holy Week, so do come and join our parish community in the celebration of the Lord’s Supper on Thursday, the Passion and Death of the Lord on Good Friday and the Easter Vigil of the Resurrection of the Lord on Holy Saturday night.
There will be ample opportunities for Confession this week, details are below and in the Mass Times section of this Newsletter.
Ukraine - We continue to support our brothers and sisters in Ukraine by donating to CAFOD which will help the sister charity CARITAS UKRAINE and the UK Disasters Emergency Committee to help hundreds of thousands of people fleeing conflict in the country. To find out more, please visit www.cafod.org.uk.
You can also help via Aid to the Church in Need: www.acnuk.org and give to the Ukraine Emergency Appeal. Their website gives details of how your generosity helps the local church in Ukraine. Our money goes a lot further in Ukraine, so you can help the local diocese buy what they need for their people.
Palm Sunday – This year there will be a procession around the old Shelley Fountain – weather permitting - before the 10am and 11:30am Mass. At all the other Masses, we will gather outside the front of the church for the blessing of palms.
Chrism Mass – Our Altar Servers have been asked to be the principal servers at this special Mass with Bishop Richard and all diocesan priests, deacons and religious. Do come along to Arundel Cathedral on Wednesday 13th April at 6pm; it is a wonderful diocesan family event, where the Holy Oils to be used in all parishes are blessed and the priests make a renewal of their promises made at their ordination.
Altar and Confessional Swap – Canon Tim will be celebrating Mass and Confession here on Saturday morning (9th) and I will be in Billingshurst doing the same; this gives parishioners the chance to make their confessions to a different priest!
Holy Week Confessions – Our parish Lenten Confession service will take place on Monday 11th April at 7pm, at the beginning of Holy Week. We will be joined by a number of priests from the deanery, to help us on our penitential path to holiness. Confessions will also be heard after all weekday Masses, as well as during the Watch on Maundy Thursday until 11pm.
Finance Committee Meeting – Due to take place last Monday, this meeting had to be postponed, due to illness. I will let you know of the rescheduled date once it’s been agreed. In the meeting, we will be reviewing the response to our Stewardship & Planned Giving drive.
Easter Offerings - I thank you in advance for your generosity in the Easter collection, which goes to making up the salaries of parish priests.
Face Coverings – with the end of COVID legal requirements, it is a personal choice whether to wear a face covering in Church. Please respect the decision of those who continue to wear masks and those who do not.
In Memoriam – Jacqueline Foote RIP – Please keep in your prayers Jacqui, and her family who mourn at this time. Her Requiem Mass will be here at St John’s on Wednesday 20th April at 12 Noon.
With my very best wishes and prayers for you all,
Fr Aaron
