Deacon Tom Writes : 12th September 2021
Dear Friends,
The month of September is, as many months are, a great month for celebration in the Church.
Looking back and forward in this month, we have/will celebrate Gregory the Great (3rd); the Birthday of the Blessed Virgin Mary (8th); The Exaltation of the Cross (14th) Our Lady of Sorrows (15th); St. Matthew, Apostle (21st); St.Pius of Pietrelcino, ‘Padre Pio’ (23rd); Our Lady of Walsingham (24th); St. Vincent de Paul (27th) Sts. Michael, Gabriel and Raphael, Archangels (29th) and St. Jerome (30th)
For these and many other reasons it is good to come together as community into the Real Presence of the Lord to give thanks for so many blessings, while never forgetting those who, through frailty or poor health, cannot be physically present, remain very much a part of the parish of St. Johns.
One of the many blessings we give thanks for are the organisations in the Church who voluntarily give of their time and energy to helping others, including the St. Vincent de Paul Conference (SVP) and Justice & Peace group (J&P) each of whom, with more members would be able to do so much more to help elevate suffering and loneliness in our community. And let us not forget the Grandparents group!
The SVP will be making its annual appeal soon for volunteers and financial support. Please do consider supporting this appeal in whatever way you can – in prayer and/or in action.
The Justice & Peace group will (in October), in conjunction with the parish community, help us renew our ‘Covenant with the Poor’. Presently 7.5% of our first collection after each Sunday Mass, administered by the J&P, is given to support three home charities and two overseas charities. As a Fairtrade and Live Simply parish we remain in communion with those in need of our help.
Therefore, between celebration and service, we are, I suggest, an active parish community for which we give thanks to God. As more and more ‘old faces’ and some new, begin to return home to the house of the Lord, we can look forward to fulfilling the commands of the Lord to love Him and our neighbour with increased vigour!
In the next two weeks we have 3 Requiem Masses:
- On Thursday 16th September at 10.00am we celebrate the Requiem Mass for John Considine RIP.
- On Monday 20th September at 12Noon we celebrate the Requiem Mass for Sylvia Graham RIP
- On Wednesday 22nd September at 10.00am we Celebrate the Requiem Mass for Reynaldo Maritas RIP
- We heard this week of the death of Tony Leaver RIP - Funeral arrangements later.
May they Rest in Peace and Rise in Glory.
