Fr. Aaron Writes 22nd January 2023
This weekend we celebrate the Sunday of the Word of God. The readings focus on both carrying out the Lord’s work but also preaching His Holy Name and its saving power. We are called to be steeped in the scriptures, to pick up and read and to share what we have prayerfully appropriated and made our own. Perhaps, at the start of the New Year, we can make a resolution to get to know the Word of God better. It is hoped that sometime later this year, as a parish, we will have some lifelong formation sessions on the Bible, looking in depth at the Sacred Scriptures.
The Word of God has been described as God’s love letter to his people - I remember meeting the great scripture scholar and Archbishop of Milan, Cardinal Martini, at the beginning of my formation for the priesthood; he told me to never neglect the Word of God in my life and to treasure this gift from God in my ministry. Let us read with love and proclaim with Faith, the words that are spirit and are life!
Churches Together in Horsham – As we are in the middle of the octave of prayer for the unity of Christians, I would continue to encourage all of us to pray daily for unity of Christians and for the projects and initiatives we share in our town with our Christian brothers and sisters.
The Joint service is at St Mary’s Church in the Causeway at 6:00pm this Sunday, 22nd January. All are welcome!
Happy Chinese New Year! – Warm wishes to our parishioners, especially those who have arrived from Hong Kong in the past year or so, and to those with Chinese roots and traditions.
First Holy Communion Class – Session Two takes places this Saturday afternoon (21st) between 12:30pm and 1:30pm.
Parents’ Meeting – I will meet with the parents of the First Holy Communion children at 7pm on Monday 23rd January in the church, when I will speak on the topic of Reconciliation.
World Youth Day 2023 Lisbon – As we move into the new year, this wonderful event fast approaches! If you would like to come and have not indicated this to me yet - do tell me! We will continue our fundraising for the participants.
In Memoriam – Please keep in your prayers those who have recently died and especially their families who begin the New Year living with sadness and loss in the hearts.
We pray for the repose of the souls of: Yvonne Frisby, Jim McNeil, Mary Richardson, Phill Moonan and Giuiseppa Elia.
May they rest in peace and rise in glory.
With every prayer and good wish,
Fr Aaron
